PENNINE WAY: Dicks Lane to Stoodley Pike

Pennine Way below Stoodley Pike: Fingerpost re-visited! . . . and other tasks!

i. Parrock Clough footbridge (one of the 'other' tasks)

The re-build of a footbridge over Parrock Clough will be next week's job but on the basis that 'time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted' Ray, Frank H and Ken carried out a final measure-up and  decided on the best strategy. Will it work? Mmm! . . . . we'll find out next week!

ii. Finger post between Stoodley Pike and Dicks Lane: (the main task)

A finger post was installed last week but we had doubts about its overall stability. After some discussion we decided, rather than adding bracing struts, to re-position the post. Here's what happened:

1. Ken - the human mole!
The installation:

The new position for the post is nearer to the wall and well clear of the four paths that converge here.
Once the surface rubble (buried debris from wall construction) had been cleared the post-hole was easily excavated to the required depth.
The fingerpost was then inserted, positioned for direction and aligned vertically before the hole was packed very firmly with soil and stone.

The end result:

2. Left to Stoodley Pike. Right to
Dicks Lane and downhill to Callis.
3. Left to Dicks Lane, Right to Stoodley
Pike and downhill to Callis.

Mmm! Is there a problem. No - it all depend on which side of the wall you are on!

Work funded by Natural England and Calderdale Council Highways.

iii) More 'other' tasks

At the depot, we carried out a series of tasks:
*partly prepared for next week by cutting a supply of cross-treads, booking a timber drop (to the worksite) by CALVAG and sourcing sufficient screwbolts to anchor the footbridge stringers to the brackets on the bridge piers.
*cut numerous stobs for general use.
*shaped the top of a recycled marker post.
*'creo-coated' a supply of stile treadbaords.
*cleaned -up tools we had used.

All-in-all a most satisfying day - fine weather, far-reaching views, problems solved. plans in place and a steady stream of walkers, runners, dog exercisers and legal mountain bikers passing on this popular route. Everyone seemed in a cheerful mood and we had multiple compliments about the work that CROWS do. Many thanks.
