MYTHOLMROYD: Bell House Moor and Erringden Moor - Big Carry 2

Bell House and Erringden Moor

1. Big Carry 2

The second part of our moorland boardwalk project got under way with Big Carry 2

Many, many thanks to the numerous individual helpers, and members of walking and running groups who assisted in moving a significant amount of timber from Bell House to the worksite on the edge of Erringden Moor. Your willingness, energy and determination was much appreciated.

Here are a few pictures of the Carry which was supervised, along with parking, by Ian V and Rich.

1. Mo and Ginny sorting cross-treads and stobs
for the human packhorses!
2. Early-bird group setting
off from the timber pile.

3. A well-balanced load is
essential!
4. And it's across the moor I go!

5. And it's across the moor I go!
6. We'd just like to remind you that this is
our moor. We have grazing rights. You are
just a visitor . .  . but there is no charge . . .
. . . not for the moment!

7. Members of Calderdale's LDWA (Long Distance
Walkers Association).

Many thanks to 'The Calderdale Long Distance Walkers Association' who not only took part in the Big Carry but also gave a generous donation towards this boardwalk project.

Anyone interested in their activities (Social Walks, Challenge Events, Local Groups) or details of Long Distance Paths can find more information at:

www.ldwa.org.uk/calderdale

8. Here we go with the 3.0 m
stringers. Only another 25 to carry!
9. Here we go with the cross-treads
Only another 196 to carry!

10. And here are the stobs.
Only another 64 to carry!
Each section of boardwalks needs:

*Two stringers (the main 3.0 m beams)

*Two bearers (that go under the ends of the stringers)

*Sixteen cross-treads (that form the decking)

*~Six stobs (the anchoring stakes that stabilise the boardwalk)

*Kickboards where appropriate.

*Overlaps where section on boardwalks are joined together . . .

. . .  and a large number of nails and staples.

2. The Construction Gang.

As items arrived at the worksite a gang of CROWS (Ken, Ray, Mo, Frank H, Kasher, Heidi, Stella and Linda) pitched into the task of building and installing boardwalks as well as doing stints of carrying or parking duties.

Here's how the work progressed:

1. Quality work needs quality thinking!
2. That's enough thinking . . . here's
the work!

3. Nailing cross-treads. Four nails per
cross-tread. Sixteen cross-treads to nail!
4. Nailing cross-treads. Have we judged
the spacings correctly? ... Never in doubt!

5.
End of session. Boardwalks
secured, site tidied and ready
for the next work party.

6. Construction gang on way home. Good shift guys!

Many thanks to Kasher who took most of the photographs . . . which is why she has not appeared on any of them!
More construction sessions next week (weather permitting).
