Bell House and Erringden Moor Boardwalks:- the final nail!
Another ideal working day for Andrew, Ian S, Paul, Ray and Frank H to complete this boardwalk project. Division of labour was the key! While Ian gave the tops of some marker posts a second coat of yellow paint, Paul and Andrew worked at one end of the boardwalks, and Ray and Frank at the other. When Ian returned he pitched into boardwalk construction.
Here's how the day went:
1. The lower end of the boardwalk system.
The ground here rises steeply so 'stepping' by using shorter lengths of boardwalk helps with height gain.
2. A new section is being constructed to be added to the top end of the boardwalk system. The stringers are 3.0 m long and need 16 cross- treads to make one section.

3. Side-stones being dug-in to act as revetment for the steps that lead onto the lower end of the boardwalk system.
4. This is it! The final nail . . . . . . but you'll need the eyes of a hawk to spot it! Then it's . . .
5. . . . clear the site and carry tools and spare timber (hardly any!) back to Bell House, where . . .

6. . . . vehicles are packed with tools, materials and passengers for the bumpy ride back towards towards Withens Lane.
7. The end result. Mmm! Neat job! Comes with a lifetime guarantee!
We would like to thank the following for funding this project:
The Southall Trust.
Calderdale MBC Highways.
Relatives of the late Julie Gray.
Friends of Calderdale Countryside.
Ben Myers (author of 'The Gallows Pole').
Calderdale Long Distance Walkers' Association.
We also would like to thank:
- the walking groups, the running groups and the numerous individuals who carried timber from Bell House across the moor to the work sites.
- local residents and landowners who have been very helpful with access and vehicle parking.
- Calderdale MBC Highways and Natural England who dealt with 'permissions'.
What Next?
*We can start work on our back-log of reported problems that have accumulated while we have been focused on this major project.
*In late September we will start on waymarking the third section of the 'Coiners Walk'; that which leads from the moor, down into Cragg Vale and back to Mytholmroyd.
*We will 'visit' the boardwalks after a few months, partly to check for any 'bedding-in' issues but also to monitor improvements in the condition of the adjacent moorland.
