MYTHOLMROYD: Bell House Moor

Bell House Moor: Boardwalks to be!

Ken, Ray, Andrew & Frank H carried out some preparatory work for the forthcoming construction of boardwalks.

1. Packed and stacked!
Start of the day:

Cross-treads, stobs, bearers, kickboards and sundry items are all bagged up to await the CALVAG truck.

CALVAG, prompt as ever, arrive with a load of stringers for the boardwalks, pick up our stacked items and set off up Cragg Vale towards Bell House . . . it's a bumpy ride!

At Bell House timber and tools are unloaded and re-stacked . . . then . . .

. . . a markerpost was replaced, several faded post tops were re-painted and a small quantity of stringers, cross-treads, bearers etc were carried to the worksite. Many thanks to a local resident who not only helped us with the latter task but also provided refreshments - the effort and kindness were much appreciated.

2. Post tops being re-painted
3. Short break in between 'carries' across the moor.

4. It's a long, long trail a-winding!
Later:
The human pack-horses in action!

The moorland grasses and heathers are tinder-dry at the moment and parts of the path surface are deceptively firm. However, we know from experience, what appears to be sound now will be a treacherous bog in a few months time.

Installing the boardwalks will keep footfall in the correct direction and prevent the path from being churned wider and wider as walkers wander off route in an attempt to negotiate boggy areas.

Our 'Big Carry Day' is on Saturday (30th July 10.30 to 15.30) when volunteers will help carry the rest of the timbers to the worksite. Thanks in advance for those who have already offered their services. Full details of the arrangements are on the CROWS website.
