Gut Royd Farm: cross-drain
Peter, Catherine and Frank H returned to the location where the footpath (Todmorden 178) enters Gut Royd Wood.
Start of the session:The path entering Gut Royd Wood is heavily scoured down its central section.
A cross-drain in the position indicated by the rail should collect any run-off and direct it harmlessly down the banking on the left . . .
Time to:
*dig a deep enough trench.
*grade the slope of the trench
*cut stone to line the base of the trench.
* add side revetments to the trench
*stand back and admire.
End of session
Completed cross-drain.The perspective is tricky - it has got the required downwards slope from front to back! |
"You are supposed to be admiring, not scoffing the grass!" |
The fine but slightly breezy day was ideal for energetic working. Hence, lots of excavating, grading, barrowing, stone cutting (skillful use of bolster chisel), stob hammering, drilling, nailing and landscaping etc. We were pleased with the outcome that should significantly reduce water erosion on this section of the path.
Today's work was funded by the landowners who also provided the bulk of the materials. Many thanks.
