CHARLESTOWN - above Underbank

The day started with a bit of snagging from last week's work below Wood Farm. The water decided to escape out of our fine drain, so it needed to be lengthened. Fingers crossed that will work!

Neil, Lynda, Rich and later Billie worked on clearing the stone steps running down the hillside below Winters to Underbank House.

The path

The same view around 1774 (The steps run from Great House to Higgins House - now a ruin)

The paths and steps are not marked on this map. We suspect the steps were built around 1850 partly to let workers get down from the tops to Callis Mill. More information about the history of this hillside is on the Charlestown History website

So, to work - mulch and vegetation all over the steps and encroaching brambles were the two main problems to tackle.

Middle flight - there are steps under here!

Top flight - you can just make them out

Middle flight getting final TLC

Top flight all clear

We also did some cutting back of Holly higher up and did a recce of another path nearby.

We will be back to complete the bottom flight of steps.
