Mount Shed: in-house tasks
A wet day with heavy rain being forecast - an ideal incentive for Ken, Stella and Frank H to spend on tasks in the CROWS depot.
In a flurry of activity, the following were dealt with:
1. Noticeboard:
Work in progress |
A large 'message-board' was fixed to the framework near the 'administration' table. The board is clearly visible to anyone descending the steps into the depot and will be useful for alerting volunteers as to any in-house issues, stating if tools will be out of the depot for longer than usual and clarifying any last minute change of plans etc.
If felt-tip board-writers are used then a small amount of WD-40 added to the wiping rag ensures a clean wipe!
2. Gate construction:
Measure twice, cut once! |
A basic pedestrian gate (~0.9 m x 0.9 m) with evenly spaced vertical palings fixed to two horizontals and braced with a diagonal going up from 'hinge-side' to latch-side' was constructed to replace a dilapidated gate in the Todmorden area.
3. General Kits:
As neat as it gets! |
All four 'general' kits were checked, sorted and replenished. Mmm! A selection of interesting additions seem to have crept into some of the kits!
4. Draught exclusion:
Major gaps high up in the interior wall were blocked to reduce the amount of draught from other areas of Mount Shed. This won't make the depot any warmer, but it might reduce the amount of dust that drifts through or is dislodged from inaccessible high ledges within the depot.
5. Odds and sods:
e.g. Some 3.0 m x 100 mm x 100 mm posts were collected from CALVAG, a small supply of step-legs for stiles were cut; the power saw was cleaned and oiled; a drill bag was replaced; drills batteries were recharged and new hanging positions found for any items displaced by the new noticeboard.
All-in-all a useful morning's work although the alleged 'heavy rain' of the forecast seem a poor effort when judged by Upper Calder Valley standards! By lunchtime the sun was attempting to break through and it was certainly warmer outside the depot than in!
Many thanks to Ken whose van seems to possess 'Tardis-like' properties in being able to carry impressive quantities of useful goods!
