The two Franks, Paul and Rich went to fix a very deep narrow groove in a section of the Pennine Way running between Edge Lane and Smithy Lane.
Well that was the plan, but when we arrived, the path was blocked by a tangle of bushes that had blown down during the weekend. These were removed with great help from the adjacent landowner,
That's one of the Franks in there with the loppers! |
Then we noticed that the path was running with water from two blocked silt traps.
Frank S and Rich dug out the silt in both so the water could run freely.
Frank S deep down one of the drains |
Half-an-hour later the water reappeared on the surface lower down the path. Cause? Probably a blockage or a broken pipe. Action ? Time to inform the Council's water experts.
Meanwhile, Frank H and Paul got on with the planned jobs by putting in horizontal boards in the groove to act as 'stops' to prevent wash-out.
Mytholmroyd builders arrived just at the right time so we could start filling the groove with aggregate.
The end result is a much more foot-friendly surface for walkers and runners.
Work in progress. The aggregate is a bit 'shouty' but it will dull very quickly on this site |
Because of the time spent cutting back and sorting drainage we were not able to deal with the exposed pipe lower down - a job for another day.
Work funded by Natural England and Calderdale Highways.
