Task 1: Finger signpost at junction of Sourhall Road and Flower Scar Road
Here's the problem.
A very tall finger signpost has come out of the ground. It needs burying more deeply to withstand wind loading, and repositioning to avoid being accidently nudged by reversing vehicles.
The picture shows that Mick is perfectly capable of leaning on a spade while pretending to inspect the hole dug by Frank H!
Here's the installed post:
Buried, firmly packed, pointing in the correct direction and away from any possible contact with vehicles.
It still looks disproportionately tall so it's a 'watching brief' to see how it survives any winter winds. However, it is vertical .... or, at least, as vertical as the professionally installed power line pole in the background!
Task 2: Distressed stile West of Dobroyd Castle
The lower step was adequate but the higher step had a leg and a treadboard that were both rotten. Additionally the step-up and the gap-across from lower to higher were too large.
The solution was to replace the broken step but convert the structure into a three-step stile.
Here's the end result. The lowest step is the original. The second and third steps are new, and have been cross-braced. All three steps are evenly spaced with parallel and level treadboards.
However, the stile side-uprights are in poor condition.
The right-hand upright consists of two posts, one acting as a brace for the other, but both are now rotten at the base.
The left-hand upright is loose but may otherwise be usable.
The cross-rails are sound but not horizontal and the topmost rail may be slightly too high.
Lots to do here on our next session but a shorter access route may be available - hooray!
