TODMORDEN: (Walsden) 1. Cranberry Dam & 2. Ramsden Wood

1. Cranberry Dam: two-step stile over stockfence (... continued!)

Ken and Frank H continued with the construction for which some preparatory work was done on Wednesday.

Start of the session
Mid-morning

(Left) After some trial and error, the holes for the side uprights have been aligned so both uprights and the fence post will be in line.

(Right) Both side uprights in place and a temporary rail links all three posts.

The morning was not without its problems. Simultaneously getting the faces of the three posts in line, ensuring that the stile side uprights were vertical, packing the post holes and fixing the cross-rail to be horizontal seemed to require a minimum of five hands - an anatomical difficulty for two volunteers!

Fortunately the afternoon task of installing step legs, adjusting their positions for height so the stock fence did not have to be compromised and fitting the treadboards all went smoothly (... relatively! ...) Late-on in the session, we were delighted by the appearance of Mick and Ray who not only formed part of the admiration team but also acted as Sherpas to carry tools and spare materials back to the vehicles.
What were they admiring? Well, this week we have gone from . . .

This ...                                                    ... to ...                                           ... This ...

Friday!

Wednesday!

2. Ramsden Wood: revetment

Earlier, Ray completed a short extension to the revetment we installed last month on the path above Ramsden Wood.

The path (top of picture) was in danger of being eroded and collapsing down the shale slope. Widening of this path and adding the short (1.0 m) lengths of rail to shore up the banking should now make this route safer. However, the combination of shale and clay slopes with torrential South Pennine downpours mean this right-of-way may need more remedial work in a year or so.

Both of today's tasks were sponsored by the Crook Hill Windfarm Community Fund.
