HEBDEN BRIDGE

Mo and Ian were out today mending broken stiles in the area above Machpelah near the town centre.

The first stile needed a new step leg and treadboard. It took an awful lot of work to create a deep enough hole to put in the new leg that supports the treadboard. We then had to haul the large stones around below the stile to create a stone step to make it easier for walkers to negotiate. The path over the stile going uphill was thick with wet leaf mulch that made it hard walking, so when we finished the job Mo used her spade to scrape some of it away. With a few dry days! it should dry out and make it less slippery.

The second stile going up to Burlees lane was easier.  Someone had knocked off the treadboard and one of the legs, flinging them into the nearby field (why?) The landowner had reported the problem and was quite cross that it had been vandalised. It was quite easy to knock the leg back into its hole and reattach the treadboard. The step up onto the stile was quite high though so we will be back to build a second lower step.
