ABOVE BAITINGS RESERVOIR

 Information Board Resurrection

A day on which BBC Weather suggested drizzle first thing, then fine and the Met Office Weather suggested fine at first  then drizzle. Both were partly correct. No prizes for guessing!

The task for Mick and Frank H was to replace an information board, Here's the problem:

Baiting Reservoir in the misty background.
Information board at ground level! Only one support post remains!

This is a very windy location for any board with such a large surface area. Originally it was attached to two posts by being screwed through the thin plywood backing of the board - a flimsy securing method that was bound to have a limited lifespan.

Here's the plan. The single remaining post is to be re-used. Two addition posts will be inserted. The one shown in the picture is a work in progress.

A cross-rail spanning all three posts will act as a support for the information board which will be fixed to the posts by suitable brackets.

Easily described but much harder to put into action. The ground was impacted road scrapings and old post stubs embedded in concrete lurked below the surface in the most inconvenient of locations!

By lunchtime:

Left hand post now firmly in place. It is vertical and parallel with the original post.

The weather is clearer although it is still drizzling, windy and cold. - just a typical March day in the South Pennines.

Here's the finished construction.

The information board is resting on the cross-rail and supported by three posts, one of which is hiding behind Mick. Multiple brackets behind the board secure its frame to the posts.

The board still needs rubbing down and a coat of preservative but that will have to wait for temperatures above 10 Celsius.

Mick and Frank were both happy with the improvements ... but were also certain that South Pennine weather would put their efforts to the test!
