WIDDOP GATE & MIDGLEY

Two teams today

WIDDOP GATE

Paul painted a post at the top of Mytholm Steeps and then joined Ginny and Rich at Widdop Gate.

The problem identified by NT staff was that the steps down to the stream had become very overgrown and difficult to use. The path is very popular and is often used by families.

We started by shearing back all the encroaching nettles, bracken and heather to widen the path, then set to clearing the steps.

Both the stone steps and sleeper steps below were very overgrown

Stone steps all cleared and much easier to use

Nettles and ferns removed from top section.

We made a start on the sleeper steps - the ends of the sleepers had become covered in moss and grass. Whilst walkers won't find this a problem, it will shorten the life of the steps. It is slow work, so we will be back next week (weather permitting).

MIDGLEY

Ian and Ray worked on a path above Midgley Chapel that had collapsed in a couple of places. The first section required a full 3.6 metre length of revetment above two shorter lengths and then a lot of infill. For the shorter section we  used revetment recovered from the first section plus yet more infill.

We then moved on to a path lower down the hillside to address a drainage problem. Whilst walking to this point we discovered several more sections of path in urgent need of revetment (a job for another day). As we started the drainage repair the rain and wind arrived and our enthusiasm departed so no photos were taken of our soggy efforts with the drain.
