A team comprising Frank H, Ian S and Ray set off at a steady pace in steady rain to solve the problem of collapsed path edges in Middle Dean. It was a tricky task demanding high energy, significant effort and a longer day than usual. Fortunately, the wet weather cleared to give a warm, sunny but humid afternoon.
Here are before and after pictures:
Path before:
This is one of the two places where the path has collapsed on the left-hand side. There is also a drop to the right leaving walkers faced with a narrow stone 'tightrope'.
Path after:
The foliage has been cut-back, the bottom of the collapse levelled, 'long stobs' hammered into the ground and revetment boards fitted, levelled and nailed in place. In-fill (loads and loads of infill!) has been added to give a wider path. The edges have been landscaped and any brash from the cutting back has been stacked behind the mill dam side of the revetment. The edge of one of the revetments is just visible in the left foreground.
Here are some photos of how the work progressed:
Base of collapse levelled and firstStobs (just about visible) in place and revetment now four rails high. |
Parts of this path surface may settle after the effects of usage and Pennine downpours. We may have to check the situation after a month or so and add some surface dressing.
Today's work was funded by donations to CROWS.
