CORNHOLME

A beautiful sunny day to be doing ditching and drainage.  Mick, Mo, Catherine, Ian and Ginny were on the hillside above Cornholme trying to repair damage from the recent storm.  The ditches were overflowing onto the hillside.

So we cleared the drainage channel above

while Ian used rods to improve the flow under the bridge.  Then we moved on to another blocked bridge where the water flowed over instead of under.  Mick supervised Mo and Catherine trying to find the hole.

Eventually, with the help of rods the channel was cleared. However, in the process, Mick lost his squirrel! (That's the swirly bit on the end of the rods).

and the water flowed under the bridge!

Before joining the others on the drainage issues, Catherine and Ian put in a revetment to improve the path below the drainage work.
Before - narrow path falling away just next to a stile
After - path widened and supporting revetment in place

The work was funded by Cornholme's wreath making activity last Christmas.

Meanwhile back at the base, in Mytholmroyd, Ken and Nigel pitched into a long list of in-house tasks. e.g. Ken fetched a supply of poles from CALVAG and cut an impressive number of stobs as well as sawing timbers for stile side-uprights and step-legs. Nigel 'yellow topped' marker-posts and poles as well as painting yellow bands on the long bars to act as a depth indicator/identifier. In a tribute to his muddy pot-holing days Nigel also dug out one of the silt-filled sumps/ash pits that are in front of every fireplace in the CROWS cellar. Good effort, guys!  However, there's lots more still to do!
