FOSTER DAMS AND WIDDOP

A new sign was installed at the start of the permissive path along Foster Dams, Hebden Bridge.

Hopefully this will last longer than the previous one!
Sign funded by the owners - Millpond Alliance

Rich, Ian and Ginny went up to Widdop to work on two sites.

Lovely path from Widdop Gate steps to the road to Blake Dean - a useful route but not much used as it is overgrown and lacks waymarking.

The heather and bilberry were cut back using hand tools and electric hedge cutters; the latter being very efficient . . . until the batteries ran out! We will be back to finish the job off.

They don't look any different, but try walking along the path now - much easier.
Narrow path with steep edge now widened, ready for revetment.

Path from the roadside widened ready for a few steps
Marker post put in.
A second visit is planned to deal with revetment and put in some steps.

The path at Blake Dean down to the bridge is sometimes covered when the stream is in flood. The alternative route is higher but a bit of a mess. Drainage issues needed sorting and some cutting back would access the path easier.

A blocked drain means water overflows down the path
Drain now running freely and the path is already drying out.

Drainage channels and stepping stones should get people across in the dry

Finally, steps all cleaned ready for the Bank Holiday
The work done at Widdop Gate and Blake Dean was funded by National Trust as part of the Crags access path project.
