NOAH DALE

Frank H, Mick, Richard J and Rich from CROWS were joined by Mick's sister and a friend from Nigeria, Howard from Shore and several people from an ad hoc running group who organise events in the area.

The task was to carry a heavy load of timber and tools from the Kebs Road at the Lancashire border, up to Hoof Stones Height then down to the site of the new footbridge in Noah Dale. This is Mick's alleged 30 min stroll:- a time he once achieved in his youth, on a good day!
Needless to say, we got nowhere near this time, but did have the excuses of being encumbered by personal kit, loaded with assorted materials, and baked by blisteringly hot weather.

Bridge materials stockpiled prior to CALVAG's delivery of the 4.5 m stringers

Bearers for the stringers being pre-cut prior to carrying, with Mick multi-tasking by simultaneously supervising, sitting down and acting as a counterweight.

One stringer well on its way at Hoof Stones Height.

The on-site stockpile ready for the construction task next week
All done by 12.30. A good effort all-round and special thanks not only to Danny and his group but also to Blackshaw Parish Council who are funding this work.

Meanwhile on a lighter note . . . As you walk down the upper reaches of Noah Dale on a narrow moorland path that seems to disappear into the edge of infinity, your mind tends to wander a bit. All sorts of nonsense bubbles up to distract you from how far you still have to hump that load, and thoughts become focused on problems associated with next week's construction task.

So here we go with a parody of 'Sailing' (Rod Stewart 1975) . . .

'Nailing'

I am nailing, I am nailing
Cross-treads to the beam.
I am nailing, dodgy timbers
For the bridge, across the stream.

I am crying, I am crying
My thumb is quite a pain.
I've hit it, on the down-stroke
With the hammer, once again!

Can you hear me; can you hear me?
Teeth gritted, like a man!
I think it's broken, really broken
And first-aid, is in the van!!

Mmm! Must be the heat. Back to reality next week.
