TODMORDEN - Scaitcliffe Wood continued

The task of improving the steps through Scaitcliife Wood on Tod 082 continues. Today Catherine, Duncan, Kasher and RJ tackled a section of the path which had a failing piece of revetment; installed more steps with wooden risers and repositioned a number of the stone steps. We also met a walker!

After an initial (heated) discussion about the best way forward, it was decided to remove the existing top piece of revetment and to replace it with new boards and insert new stobs. Because of the revetment's position at the top of a very steep bank, we worked carefully to remove the old timbers and then add in the new boards, securing them with 'extra long' stobs. We also protected further lengths of the path edge with revetments. We then cut back the banking to widen the path so that people were not having to walk near the edge above the steep drop.

We added in four long steps below a section of stone steps which have been pushed out of alignment by the oak tree growing growing by the path. We have started to re-position some of these stone steps but this is a work in progress and we will return, hopefully next week, to complete the job. Repositioning and packing the steps has resulted in one very high step which will be sorted out during our next visit.

Today's work has been funded by individual donations to CROWS. Many thanks.
