WALSDEN - Cranberry Dam

As temperatures crept towards 30 oC, today was really a day for finding a job in a cool, shady woodland setting. Unfortunately this was not to be as we had agreed to repair a dilapidated ladder stile and to install a couple of markerposts on the sun-scorched paths near Cranberry Dam.

Mmm! It is clear why some tasks stay on the CROWS' "to do" list for a considerable time . . . . Cranberry Dam involves a long, long, uphill carry of timber and tools!

Today's problem was reported by a walker. Many thanks and apologies that this has taken several weeks to sort out!

Catherine and Kasher set forth from the fishing lake near Ramsden Wood and walked uphill to the ladder stile which is on right-of-way Tod 136. We tried to minimise the quantity of tools and timbers we were carrying but it was still a tough slog.

We may need to return (with a heavy bar) to put the two markerposts in more deeply and take the opportunity to clear and in-fill some of the steps on this path.

Just one side of the stile needed some work - the original rungs were either missing or dangerously decayed - but the whole stile may need replacing in a couple of years. For the moment, however, today's repairs have made it safe to use.

Whilst in the area we repositioned one markerpost and installed a new markerpost at the junction of Tod 135 and Tod 136.

Today's work was funded by Todmorden Town Council. Many thanks.

The ladder stile with the missing rung- only
suitable for the most long-legged of walkers!.

The timbers on the upright have some 'non-fatal' splits.

Most of the old rungs have been removed
and the first new rung is in place.

Progress! Catherine nailing the other new rungs.

The completed stile. Neat . . . and safe.

"Dead men" being added to a markerpost.

The markerpost (yes, it is vertical!) now in position.
