TODMORDEN - Scaitcliffe Wood

A team of five (RJ, Neil Mc, Gareth, Catherine and Kasher) returned to Scaitcliffe Wood to continue the tasks of replacing wooden steps, putting in or renewing revetment and widening the right-of-way (Tod 082). This steep path starts behind the old Scaitcliffe Hall and goes ever-upwards towards Flailcroft.

Regular readers of the blog will remember that we replaced 40+ steps below Flailcroft a couple of years ago (see blog of June 2023) The current work on the steps in Scaitcliffe Wood will make the overall route much safer to use. The path has been attracting increased footfall as it is on one of Christopher Goddard's 'Woodland Walks' (Route 19, 'The Woods of Todmorden').

Two weeks ago the team constructed eight new steps. Today we managed to install 10 more steps, clear the next section of path of old stobs and broken steps, and widen the pathway by cutting back the banking.

We will need a few more session to work on the steps further up the slope, to add revetments and to cut back the banking where the path is narrow and the drop severe.

Today's work has been funded by Todmorden Town Council. Many thanks.
