TODMORDEN - Hudson Moor

Andrew and Kasher spent an exceptionally cold day at the top of Hudson Moor (on Tod 049) trying to improve both the stile and the fence, both of which have seen better days.

We had expected to install one new tall upright and one new step leg but in reality we probably should have gone for a complete remake of the whole structure - stile, dog gate and fence - as we found none of the original horizontal timbers were horizontal and none of the uprights were vertical!

After some debate on how to fettle up this area, a compromise was finally reached.

By the end of the day the stile had been made safer and the fence will now stop sheep and cattle coming onto the moor. We have removed the ruined dog-gate which was unnecessary as there is a pedestrian gate.

On a fine day we may return to make further improvements to this area and also to completely renew the open access stile (and accompanying fence) further down Hudson Moor towards Orchan Rocks.

Today's work was funded by individual donation to CROWS. Many thanks.

Stile, dog-gate(!) and fence at the start of the day.

Andrew aligning the new upright.

Upright installed, fences sorted, stile repaired....
and Andrew in the mud!

A safer stile, a secure fence . . .  and lots of mud!

Marker posts installed and fettled.

Future task:The open access stile (more open than usual!)
and dilapidated fencing, which need completely replacing.
