TODMORDEN - Above Robinwood

Mick & Gareth were despatched to the windy hillsides above Lydgate & Cornholme for a number of “small jobs”.

After erecting a new marker post near Vale Baptist Church, we moved on to our second job, located on the lovely path which winds down the hillside above Robinwood, descending from New Towneley Farm into Lydgate.

The path follows the route of an old fence whose metal posts were sawn off near ground level many years ago.  Our task was to extract “three or four” posts which had been reported to us as having rusted away into sharp points, constituting tripping hazards and possibly worse.

Some considerable time later, we celebrated the extraction of the last of twelve such posts!  Whoever originally put the fence up had done an excellent job of embedding them deeply and securely.  No wonder the decision had been taken to saw them off rather than dig them up when the fence was taken down.  The path - part of the Fielden Trail, which we hope to waymark in future - is now far safer to walk.

Today’s work was funded by a Calderdale Council Ward Forum grant - thanks very much.
