One of three teams out today from Todmorden consisted of Ian V, Mick and Neil M. Our task was to fix 6 marker posts to guide walkers on Bridestones Moor. Having done this we were asked to inspect an urgent report of a collapsed bridge at Daisy Bank, near Blackshawhead. Our work today was supported by generous donations from members of the public via our JustGiving service, easily found through our website - "Help with our Funds" tab.
Detail
(1) Bridestones
Starting from the trig point atop the stones we followed footpath Todmorden 043 (06/43/3) west and northwest, fixing posts at intervals as far as a point above Orchan House Farm, where a neat rockface inscription memorialises the local section of the WW2 Home Guard. One post was also fixed to the northward along the crossing path (Todmorden 044, 06/44/1).
The day started misty, but cleared up nicely giving splendid views. The cattle looked on impassively, although we know too well how they disfavour verticality in marker posts.
(2) Daisy Bank
Only a week ago CROWS had done some work on the footbridge that crosses the drainage leat near Long Row (see blog, 11 October). How sad to return and see the bridge in a state of collapse! The ground had given way under the east end of the bridge after heavy rain had evidently turned the stream to a torrent. Quite possibly the stability of the ground had been affected by the recent construction of a drainage ditch from the east, joining the stream at that same point.
Obviously the bridge is unusable at present. We mulled over possible solutions including fitting a new and longer bridge, jacking up the present bridge and providing flood-proof supports, or making a lower-level crossing nearby. We will be submitting a report to Calderdale Highways Department.
