MEG DIKE PREHISTORIC SITE above SCAMMONDEN

Angus, Jerry, Jak and Eleanor were out on this glorious summer's day with far reaching views across Scammonden Reservoir, Black Brook Valley . . . and the M62 ! There were 2 stiles to repair, one at the top andone at the bottom of the field that is the site of a rare (for Calderdale) Iron Age enclosed settlement.

Somewhere in this picture is the top stile into the field. The first job was to clear the hawthorn that was blocking access to the stile . . .

Some time later Jerry and Angus created this rather beautiful stile.

Then down at the bottom of the field was a broken stile with a very high step which made access extremely difficult and off-putting!  Jak and Eleanor spent a fruitless half-hour trying to remove the rotten posts to make way for the new uprights . Finally a new plan emerged and we decided to install the lower step below the existing high step and lower the top cross-rail . . .

The finished article from above and below. Hopefully, more people will now be able to visit the site without difficulty. An added bonus would be to install an education board. We will need to contact the local history group to provide background information about the site.

This work has been funded by Ripponden Parish Council and individual donations.
