COLDEN: Rough Hey area:footbridge guardrails continued

COLDEN: Guardrails - the last post!

Today, Ken and Frank H returned to Eygpt (the one at the end of Edge Lane) to complete the guardrails for the new footbridge on the footpath (Heptonstall 011) that crosses the gully where Pinion Clough becomes Rough Hey Clough. One more post needed to be embedded to stabilise the end-section of the safety fencing.

Today's work was funded by Calderdale Council Highways.

The detail

Using a heavy maul to hammer a square-section post vertically downwards so it just touches all three rails of a fence and does not twist out of line (plan A) is not always a successful exercise. As an alternative (aka plan B) we also took a round-section post as a potential substitute. Mmm! Thirty hits later and plan A had worked a treat. Hooray!

Here's how the approach to the footbridge looked before and after the guardrails were fitted . . .

1. Precipitous corner - one step
back and you are doomed!

2. Fully completed guardrails with
a much happier looking Ken.

The swift completion of this task gave us time to investigate other possible jobs nearby (a wayward gate spring and a problematic stile) before Ken departed to measure up for a pedestrian gate and Frank collected Kasher for a survey trip to ponder over two stiles and a broken (historic) boundary stone in the Eastwood area . . . it's going to be a busy summer!
