A cold but blue-skied South Pennine day for a variety of tasks for Billie, Frank H and Kasher.
1. Colden, Edge Lane: plan.
This job was a survey by Billie & Frank to decide on the best solution for a problematic stile. The much repaired stile has the following problems:
1. Stile to be re-styled! |
both side posts (which are also the straining posts for the stockfence!) are rotten at ground level.
* some of the cross-rails are detached.
* the single step-up from the down-slope side onto the step treadboard is very high.
*negotiating the top rail is an athletic test . . . failed by many a walker!
The plan is to:
* replace and brace the two strainers but with a wider spacing.
*build a standard two-step stile with side-posts in the gap between the strainers.
*fit and fix cross-rails to both strainers and side-posts to give a stable rigid structure.
Mmm! Sounds easy . . . but it's essential that livestock security is maintained.
*
CROWS have a long list of structural tasks in the 'pipeline' but we hope to tackle this job in March.
2. Charlestown, Turret Hall Road: post.
Billie and Frank then moved on to Turret Hall Road where a fingerpost needed re-installing.
1. Before: Neither vertical nor pointing in the correct direction! |
2. After: Vertical, firmly embedded and, most usefully, pointing in the correct direction! |
3. Mytholmroyd, in the depot: paint
Meanwhile, in the CROWS depot Kasher painted the tops of a selection of posts and poles. Some already undercoated received a yellow top-coat. Others that had been drying out were undercoated in preparation for a top-coat. Neat job Kasher - hardly a drip in sight!
