Bullion Farm: Stile 2 - 'A driller in the mist!'
Kasher, Andrew and Frank H continued the work on a series of stiles on the Calderdale Way between Bullion Farm and Hippins. It was a cool, misty day - so misty in fact, that the first two attempts at pictures were a meaningless blur of grey!
Start of session: (up-slope view)
1. Dismantling underway. An abundance of rotten timbers! |
*Un-staple barbed wire and sections of stockfence from the rotten uprights.
*Install a pair of side-posts, one tall and one short, and align them so a cross-rail will run from the wall on the left to the (slightly out-of-true) straining post on the right.
*Install sets of short legs and long legs for the stile treadboards.
*Fix suitably spaced cross-rails.
*Install a dog-gate with lift rail.
*Re-fix barbed wire and stock- fence.
This was all more complicated than it sounds . . . and there was lots of drilling, nailing and screwing!
Work in progress and end result: (down-slope view)
2. Side-uprights in place along with legs for steps. |
3. Job done. One two-step, swing-leg-over stile completed. |
There is still a bit of tidying work to do - mainly associated with sections of stock -fence - but this will be done on Friday (conditions permitting) when we embark on repairing stile 3 and stile 4.
Today's work was funded by donations from walking groups and from individuals. Many thanks.
