TODMORDEN - Guide Quarry and Tower Causeway

On a wet, misty day a trio comprising Catherine, Ian V and Kasher worked on two tasks in the Flower Scar/Tower Causeway area.

Task 1. Guide Quarry

Sheep netting was fixed around one of the tree enclosures completed last Wednesday. The netting, re-cycled from an older enclosure, was straightened out and strain-fitted around the rails (Picture 1). Sharp-eyed observers might notice the unorthodox!

The highly-compacted ground was extremely dry - the rain appeared to have had little effect - so a hole was dug and thoroughly soaked as a preparation for planting at a later date.

1. Fixing the salvaged netting onto the enclosure.

2. Ian and the enclosure . . . minus tree!

Task 2. Bearnshaw

Chilled and damp, we moved on to the footpath (Todmorden 074) which leads from near Bearnshaw Tower to Flower Scar. The task was to reinstate, reposition and add additional posts to indicate the correct line of the RoW that leads across this remote tract of moor.

1. We must be able to get a post
in here . . . somewhere!

2. Success! One yellow-topped
post in place . . . and vertical!

By late morning, the mist had cleared to give us a fantastic view over the valley towards the Coal Clough Windfarm and Stiperden Moor but walking though the long wet grass meant 'rising damp' was a problem!

3. One out-of-line post: a candidate
for removal and re-positioning.

4. Cold feet, wet legs and very hungry . .  .
. .  . but a new post is in place!

Today's work was funded by Todmorden Town Council and by individual donations to CROWS. Many thanks.
