HEPTONSTALL - the old corpse road to Lily Hall

A lovely path, but with poor waymarking, encroaching bramble and one section of wet mulch.

The route is highlighted yellow

Stella and Rich installed a waymark post at the junction where many people had wandered off the correct path into nearby fields.

Nobody should miss the way now!

We then cut back encroaching brambles and holly on the lower section.

Holly and brambles narrowing the path

Section cleared

We then moved on to the top section to deal with some deep mulch

This route was originally an old road so we guessed there would be remains of a stone surface underneath. A combination of slow drainage and 10 years leaf drop has had its effect - it's not nice to walk through!  An hour or two of mulch scraping eventually revealed a good surface.

Mulch all clear

Finally we dealt with encroaching vegetation back to the junction.

A lovely route from Heptonstall down to Hebden Bridge.

The route turns left at Lily Hall and then right. This section is completely overgrown and not waymarked so most people won't know it is there . . . it is now on the (very long) 'to do' list.
