RIPPONDEN: BARKISLAND VILLAGE WALK 3 continued - Firth House Lane to Berry Mill

Today Bernard, Lynda and Eleanor worked on this lovely path , which was once a significant track leading to Berry Mill, now a hamlet of refurbished houses, alongside Black Brook. The day turned out to be warm and sunny despite the forecast and the previous night's thunderstorm.

This stretch of path is almost permanently muddy due to overhanging trees , but Bernard and Lynda scraped off the mud to both sides creating dry passageways for people to navigate.

An added bonus to working here was the cacophony of stunnning birdsong all around us from the surrounding woodland.

More cutting back ..... before

....... and after

After lunch , we decided that it would also be useful to work on a higher path leading from the Berry Mill settlement , which would give walkers a dry option in very wet weather as the lower path running beside Black Brook sometimes floods across the path . This alternative path  runs parallel with the lower one and meets the track  higher up and avoids a lot of the muddy sections.

This path needs more work doing to improve it, but we made a start.......

and will return next week to do more cutting back and waymark this path properly,

This work was funded by a grant from Ripponden Parish Council.
