THE PENNINE WAY AND STEPS TO DODD NAZE

Stella and Paul had the perfect day to do a survey of the Pennine Way from Callis to Colden. This was commissioned by Natural England and hopefully the work identified will be done next year.

Surveying the uplands!
Ray, Bernard, Frank H, Fred and Rich started day one of the Dodd Naze steps project.

Fred and Rich worked on the stone steps coming up from the main road.

A jumble of stones making it difficult to use (especially in poor light)
We took out all the stones and reset them and finally added a wooden step at the bottom.

Now much easier to use

All the stone steps cleared of soil, worms and leaves
A waymark was added at the bottom.

Meanwhile, Bernard, Frank H and Ray carried out remedial work on the flight of wooden steps. This was a fine balance between trying to preserve any timbers that were still sound, and replacing any rotten or potentially dangerous sections. The existing revetment needed many support stobs, several risers needed re-levelling and a dozen risers (with their stobs) needed replacing.

Steps before: side-revetment poorly secured and many risers rotten, misaligned or missing.

Work in progress: revetment secured and risers replaced.

Timber-work for first flight finished: further in-fill work on the treads may be needed next session.
The second flight presented similar problems but with more difficult ground conditions. However effective progress was made and the work will continue next week.

Work in progress: some risers replaced but more to do along with revetment work.
A further session is planned for next week when we hope to start on the "slide of death!"

This work was paid for by local people generously responding to a crowd funding campaign (with a bit of help from a landowner and Calderdale Highways)
