MOUNT SKIP (stiles);

Mount Skip:

Paul and Frank H went to do some minor repair work on two stiles at Mount Skip near Hebden Bridge Golf Club. It was a case of Plan B and deja vu!

Stile 1: Plan A was to replace the lower-step tread-board. However, as soon as the old treadboard was removed one of its apparently firm legs collapsed - a case of extensive rot! Plan B therefore was to dig out the rotten stump, install a replacement, fix the treadboard and firm-up both the side-posts and the other step legs. Here are the before and after pictures:

Stile before: loose side-posts
and rotten lower step (removed).
Stile after: new lower step, side-posts now firm
and a better fitting gate.

Stile 2: Plan A was to replace the upper-step treadboard. Here was the deja vu! Knock off the treadboard and a leg collapses! Hence Plan B - dig out the stump, replace the leg, install the treadboard, firm-up all legs and side posts (sound but very loose!), hammer staples into the short boardwalk to improve grip, dig in a take-off stone and add some waymarks. Here are the before and after pictures:

Stile before: rotten upper step removed.

Stile after: boardwalk improved, take-off stone
in place, new upper-step and Paul digging for gold.

Overall a high energy day because of the vigorous digging and ramming . . . but it did keep us warm in the persistent rain!
