Several teams out today.
Gaddings
Three teams at Gaddings doing various tasks.
Everyone started off doing a long, long uphill carry of timber and tools to Langfield Edge.
Stella and Frank worked on the breach area of the redundant dam wall.
Rich and Fred did repair work on a wooden bridge
They then worked on widening the path in several places where it goes close to a steep drop. At the same time, they sorted some drainage issues.
Richard J, Ray, Gerald and Paul worked on path widening and drainage issues lower down on the Jail Hole path.
Part 4. Swinging Tools
The Gaddings work is funded by Crook Wind Farm Community Fund and Calderdale Small Grants.

The new Sherpa backpacks make carrying timber and equipment much easier |
Before: A steep, slippery slope which was difficult to negotiate. |
After: Seven steps now in place. Probably another dozen will be needed! |
Before: Handrails are missing and water flow down the path has made the treadboards wet and muddy. |
After: New handrails fitted to make the bridge safer and more stable. Treadboards cleaned (believe it or not!) and drainage channels added to divert the water flow. |
They then worked on widening the path in several places where it goes close to a steep drop. At the same time, they sorted some drainage issues.
Original path next to the edge filled-in using materials from the widened parallel path |
Stretch of widened path |
The overflowing drain now back where it should be and no longer eroding the path |
Richard J, Ray, Gerald and Paul worked on path widening and drainage issues lower down on the Jail Hole path.
A length of widened path |
One of many turnbys to uncover |

Part 4. Swinging Tools
Azad* clears the mud;
Long handle swiftly backwards.
Oh! Was that your tooth?
Slasher; a razor.
Swings in very large radius.
Who is stood too close?
Hammer hitting stone:-
How fast those sharp chips can fly!
. . . No-one has spare eyes!
(*An azad is a long-handled, sharp-edged trenching/scraping tool)
