WAINSTALLS (Slade, Cold Edge Road) & COLDEN (Old Shaw Lane)

Dick, Dave, Gerald, Bernard, Fred and Frank continued with tasks in the swamplands of Slade.

Gerald, Bernard, Fred and Frank worked on the four-section boardwalk

"That is the great Grimpen Mire. A false step yonder means death to man or beast!"
(Mr Stapleton in The Hound of the Baskervilles).

Work in progress 1 (looking west). Sections of boardwalks butt-jointed and stabilised by driving in stakes (by hand!) to a depth of 1.8 m. Additional support provided by stone piers and wooden bearers.

Work in progress 2 (looking west). The vertical stake will be driven in to it's full length!

Work in progress 3 (looking east). Lunch break! The converted barn at Slade is in the background.

Finished product (looking west). Level, safe, stable and secure . . . but is that a large fearsome dog we hear barking?

Dick and Dave continued work on the long single-section boardwalk, installed some steps and put in place a series of marker-posts (with waymarks).

Single section, 5.4 m long boardwalk

Steps (work in progress)

Meanwhile Stella, Stuart, Paul and Richard J tackled a job at the request of the Highways Department to clear the path and blocked drains at the  Old Shaw Lane track,  Colden. This is used by local children as a route to Colden school.  Better to have a drained and nettle-free path in the morning.
