Three teams out today.
Team 1:
Rich, Dick, Richard J, Fred, Bernard and Gerald continued work on the steps down to the clapper bridge.
This flight of steps, towards the bottom, were awkward and showing signs of rot, so the first job was to rip them all out.
Meanwhile at the top .......
The stone step at the top was very narrow and being perched on the edge, would have created a very steep slope. So we moved back a couple of feet.
We are going to take a break and will come back next Wednesday to finish these two flights of steps and deal with an awkward spot in the middle.
Work is funded by Calderdale Highways and a donation from Kate in Hebden Bridge.
Team 2:
Ray and Frank H continued with stile-building in the Walshaw area. Last week's 'mini' ladder-stile still looked state of the art (even though we say it ourselves!) and judging by the amount of mud on it, had already seen considerable footfall.
Today's task was a two-step ladder stile. Here's a before picture. The side-uprights have rotted and collapsed, the remaining step is loose and a long section of stockfencing is unsupported.:
New uprights were installed and very firmly packed with broken stone. Here's a work in progress picture.
Some time and a lot of 'grunt' later we have the finished product (hooray!). Steps are in place (and at the correct height), cross-rails have been added, two support posts for the wire fence are in position and the very fragile fence wire straightened up.
What is not visible in the picture is the small 'geo-cache' that we found at the base of the old stile. It's now 'hidden' in a similar position for any 'geo-cache-ers' braving the wet descent down the moorside.
This work was funded by 'The Heptonstall Fell Race'.
The following parody to the tune of 'Moon River' comes free of charge!

A strange arrangement, beyond its sell-by date |
Clearing the slope and putting in revetment |
Adding some of the steps |
Meanwhile Fred was on stone breaking duty (you have such fun being a CROWS volunteer!)
All the steps we made earlier in the week, now infilled with stone |
These all had to come out, as well rotted |
Once the top step was re positioned, we could begin the re-build. |
Ready for next week |

Before: an unstable structure in weak ground. |
Uprights partly in place. The old step will also need replacing. |
Another quality job by CROWS! |

Old Moorland
Old moorland, wider than a mile
I'm crossing every stile, today.
Oh, bog-shaker, you boot-breaker
Whatever the going, I'll get there today!
Bog hoppers, off to see the moor:
There's such a lot of moor to see.
We're after the same mud-free end, waitin' round the bend
My soggy, swampy friend ... old moorland and me!
{With apologies to Audrey Hepburn, singer of 'Moon Rive'r (1961)}
Team 3
Graham and Stella surveyed the Mytholmroyd Walkers Action Scout Rock walk.
