EASTWOOD & LUDDENDENFOOT

Two teams out today

Alastair, Eleanor, Mo and Rich worked on a delightful woodland path up Shaw Clough at Eastwood (Todmorden 036). The path was poorly waymarked, overgrown, and quite narrow in places.

A good example of the path being encroached by holly.
We also cut back laurel, ash, brambles and hawthorn.

The holly was encroaching on this stream crossing - now all cut back

Several sections of the path needed mulch scraping off . Some sections were narrow and on a slope - these were widened and levelled.

A widened and leveled section
Several waymarks were put above the woodland area and a waymark post put in at the junction of paths.

Believe it or not, this post is vertical! . . .
... and there's nothing wrong with our spirit level!
We also cleared a couple of stone steps, removing moss and vegetation.

A lovely set of steps on the path going up to Harvelin Park
This work was funded by Calderdale Council Small grants as part of the link paths to Gaddings Dam.

Gerald, Ken, and Frank S made another trip to the extremely boggy field at Luddendenfoot. Arriving for the second visit on 7th June we had found the path cleared on the first visit was under water again.

That meant digging more drains and laying stones, which was eventually finished on our third visit on 21st June, with a dry causeway and two cross drains.

We also re-used old bricks from the bog to make a brick causeway with another drain.

And the two causeways were linked with stepping stones through the turf just in case it got too boggy again.

It looked good at the time, but we'll need to look again after the cows have trampled over it to see if it's all strong enough.
