HARDCASTLE CRAGS
Dick, Kate and Stella cleared an overgrown RoW close to the wishing.
A marker post was sited to make the route clearer. Further along a large fallen tree is blocking the path which NT is to remove so we can complete the job.
The work was funded by National Trust.
ERRINGDEN MOOR
Fred and Ray rebuilt a broken-down ladder stile leading onto Erringden Moor
The following pictures show the state of the ladder stile before refurbishment. The stile is precariously high, the top of the side-timbers are rotten, the platform slopes and there are no grab posts. Negotiating this stile is difficult and walkers have been defaulting to scrambling over the dry-stone wall, an irresponsible action that has caused significant damage.
Before picture: Stile rotten at top, remains of old grab post also rotten and some damage (not easily noticeable) to the 'rungs'. |
Before picture: Other side of stile- Rotten top timbers and damage to the wall are visible. |
Before picture:an exposed, sloping top platform and a wall missing capping stones. |
Fred and Ray started with Plan A which, unsurpisingly, evolved into Plans B, C and D as the work progressed. The eventual solution was to lower the height of the stile, replace the side-bracing, replace the platform, replace the rungs on one side and add grab posts . . . .
. . . . Several hours later:

After picture: Stile is lower, new support bracing has been added platform is level (and wider), grab posts are in place and the side-timbers are pinned at the bottom with stobs. |

After picture: View from the other side of stile showing features as before but with wall capping stones replaced and the addition of another waymark disk to keep walkers on the right track! |
