Two teams out today.
Paul and
Frank H went to a sunny ledge at the top end of a field above Old Town, to repair and refurbish two stiles and one marker post. It was a cold, sunny, windless day with magnificent South Pennine views.
Task 1: To level-up the cross-rails on an awkward stile, add a grab post and embed a suitable take-off/landing slab. No 'before' pictures for this task but here's what it looked like once we had finished . . . . with Paul unselfishly appearing as 'model for the day'.
 |
Vertical grab pole in place, level cross-rails in stile gap and,
hidden by shadow, a substantial slab at ground level. |
Task 2: To refurbish a battered stile! No 'before' picture but here's a 'work in progress' shot . . . also enhanced by the presence of Paul.
 |
The step legs have been packed more firmly, a new treadboard
added and the lowest rails sorted out, levelled and re-nailed. |
Next we have a final shot showing an additional lower step (cunningly created) and the upper cross-rails re-aligned. Paul features again . . . but perhaps not his best side!
 |
Extra step in place (crafty arrangement) and cross-rails horizontal and parallel. |
Task 3: To re-embed a marker post. No 'before' picture:- just imagine the post laid on the ground, pointing vaguely in the direction of Andromeda! However here's an 'after' shot . . . Paul, however. seems to have 'done a runner'!
 |
Marker post in place:- vertical, rock-solid and directionally accurate! |
All-in-all a most enjoyable day:- ideal conditions, stunning views and tasks - not quite as straightforward as the pictures suggest - to puzzle over.
Team 2
RJ, Kate, Bernard, Stella, Ray and Gerald continued the work on the footpaths to Gaddings. Seven marker posts, spades, bars and tools were carried up along the Jail Hole path and the posts were embedded into frosty ground in the most glorious weather.
